Your Guide to Modern Varicose Vein Care

Varicose veins affect around 20% of adults and can lead to swelling, discomfort, skin damage, clots and visible veins that impact both day-to-day comfort and confidence.

Many people are surprised to learn how much varicose vein care has changed in recent years, with a shift from more invasive procedures to today’s minimally invasive, walk‑in walk-out treatment options.

Finding the best approach to varicose vein care depends on what’s happening beneath the surface. Varicose veins typically develop when vein valves are no longer working effectively, allowing blood to flow backwards, downhill and pool in the vein. Because of this, the most important first step is a comprehensive consultation supported by detailed ultrasound vein mapping.

Ultrasound provides a clear picture of how your veins are functioning and allows our specialists to create a personalised plan that addresses the source of the problem, not just the veins you can see.

Why ultrasound matters

Ultrasound vein mapping helps your clinician understand:

  • Which veins are not functioning as they should
  • Where reflux (backward blood flow) begins
  • Which deeper seated veins are contributing to visible varicose veins

This level of precision allows treatment to be accurately targeted, helping to reduce the chance of recurrence and deliver more durable, long‑lasting results.

Modern Endovenous Treatment: Radiofrequency Ablation (EVA)

Endovenous ablation (EVA) is a modern, minimally invasive technique used to close faulty veins from the inside under ultrasound guidance. In our clinics EVA is performed using radiofrequency ablation (RFA).

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

RFA uses controlled radiofrequency energy delivered through a fine catheter to gently heat and seal the affected vein. Once closed, blood naturally reroutes through healthier veins, improving circulation, symptoms and appearance.

RFA is performed under local anaesthetic and is commonly described as a |walk‑in, walk‑out” procedure. Following a 10-minute walk, most people return home shortly afterwards with minimal downtime.

Who is suitable?

You may be a good candidate for EVA (RFA) or another endovenous treatment if you:

  • Have symptomatic varicose veins
  • Have veins confirmed as incompetent on ultrasound
  • Prefer a minimally invasive option with faster recovery and less complications when compared with traditional surgery

Not all veins are suitable for ablation, but there are other highly effective treatment options available.

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS)

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) is a non-surgical treatment for varicose veins often recommended for:

  • Recurrent varicose veins
  • Larger veins that are not suitable for ablation
  • Smaller vein pathways contributing to symptoms

This established treatment has been used for over 150 years and remains an important part of modern vein care.

Recovery and aftercare

Modern varicose vein treatments are designed to be straightforward and comfortable. Procedures are performed under local anaesthetic, and most people walk out shortly after. Recovery is typically quick, with many able to return to light activities the same day or the next.

Compression stockings are part of the aftercare:

  • Usually worn day and night for the first week
  • Then during the day for one to two additional weeks, depending on treatment extent

Your clinician will guide you through exactly what to expect.

You will need to walk for 30-40 minutes every day for the first 2-3 weeks after treatment, and not undertake any heavy lifting, vigorous exercise or gym work for 2-3 weeks.

Tailored Treatment

The best treatment is the one tailored to your veins, symptoms and ultrasound findings. A consultation with ultrasound mapping gives you a clear diagnosis and a personalised plan that treats the source of the problem, not just what you can see.

If you’re experiencing discomfort, visible veins or symptoms affecting your confidence, a vein assessment is a helpful first step in understanding your options.
