How UV Exposure Affects Skin, Moles and Pigmentation

UV radiation has a direct impact on melanocytes; the pigment-producing cells in our skin. This is why many people notice new moles, darker freckles, or uneven pigmentation after summer.

Changes to your skin or moles after UV exposure

Moles may:

  • Darken
  • Become slightly raised
  • Increase in size
  • Become more noticeable against tanned skin

While many changes are benign, some can indicate early skin cancer. Warning signs that require assessment include:

  • Asymmetry
  • Irregular borders
  • Colour changes
  • Moles that itch, bleed, or don’t heal
  • Rapid growth

Pigmentation Changes

Freckles, sunspots, and patches of uneven tone often appear or worsen after months of outdoor activity. These reflect UV-induced damage to melanocytes and while some pigmentation can be treated, prevention remains the most effective approach.

If you notice persistent or unusual changes following summer, a professional skin check is recommended.
