What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are clear gels made from a hyaluranon, a natural carbohydrate already present in your skin that declines with age. Hyaluranon is a powerful hydrator and helps collagen formation. Dermal fillers physically sculpt the face, enhancing facial contour and reducing folds and wrinkles.

Many women fear looking overdone with dermal filler.  We understand your concerns – we don’t like the unnatural look either.  At Skin Institute we favour the understated, natural look which we achieve through a holistic facial assessment and gradual treatment to restore the natural contours of your face.

What can dermal fillers do for me?

As we age we lose “volume” in our faces due to ageing changes in the fat and bone deep under the skin. This leads to the overlying skin forming folds, making us look tired and sad.  Placing dermal filler at key points in the face can restore volume for a refreshed, happier look with reduced jowls and sag. We can also enhance your lips, cheeks, and chin. Dermal fillers are a simple, safe way to improve your look.

Are they suitable for everyone?

Mostly, but as with any medical cosmetic treatment there are some cautions. We advise against pregnant or breast-feeding women having treatment, and we won’t treat clients who have previously had permanent filler, as it can trigger problems. And if you are unwell with a cold or flu, we prefer not to treat until you’ve recovered.

Book a 45-minute consultation with one of our experienced appearance medicine nurses to find out if dermal fillers are right for you.

Does it hurt and is there any downtime after treatment?

Dermal filler contains a local anesthetic, meaning most people find placement surprisingly comfortable. If you wish we can use numbing cream or even local anesthetic blocks for maximum comfort.

You can expect some redness and swelling, or the possibility of a bruise which may last up to two weeks. Concealer can cover any bruising you may experience while it fades.

I've heard filler can cause blindness. Is that true?

Yes, blindness is an extremely rare complication of dermal filler treatment, caused by filler inadvertently being injected into an artery and travelling to the back of the eye. It’s incredibly rare, but a single case was recently reported in NZ, with about 100 cases reported worldwide out of millions of treatments. We know treatments of the nose and “glabella” area (between the brows) are higher risk. The risk associated is estimated about 1 in 20,000 – similar to the risk of blindness with upper eyelid surgery.

At Skin Institute, we believe the key to preventing the extremely remote chance of blindness is to take it very seriously. Our Appearance Medicine doctor, Dr Hans Raetz has been acting to improve safety standards for years, campaigning for better dermal filler regulation in NZ and teaching safer injection techniques to minimise the chance of blindness. We have educated our team with the latest techniques and developed policies to prevent and treat blindness. We are committed to ensuring you are in the safest hands for your filler treatment.

If you’re interested in dermal fillers, the best place to start is by talking to an experienced practitioner who knows the risks and can ensure the filler is administered safely. At Skin Institute we have rigorous protocols around filler treatment and only our highly-trained doctors and registered nurses perform these. Our team is overseen by Dr Hans Raetz who is also the President of the Cosmetic Society of New Zealand, and spoke to  1 NEWS about filler, click here to watch the video.
