What is PRP for hair loss?

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma Transfer) contains a range of growth factors and proteins that speed tissue repair. There is some scientific evidence to suggest that it can promote hair growth by improving quality, density and strength of the hair follicle.

What does PRP do for hair loss?

PRP can be used when hair loss results from androgenetic alopecia which is a common condition that causes hair follicles to shrink. The treatment involves a process where a small collection of your own blood is obtained, processed and then re-injected into the scalp. This will allow the miniaturised (weak and thin) hair follicle to repair at a cellular level.
The results depend on your own platelet function and individual results may vary – so we cannot guarantee your results. Most people should have 3 treatments about 3-4 weeks apart with a maintenance treatment every 6 months for optimal results. Results may be visible within 4-6 months. We prefer to perform a nerve block using local anaesthetic to make the treatment more comfortable for you.

  • Pre-Treatment Care

Wash your hair on the day before coming for your treatment and avoid using any hair products on your hair to minimize risk of irritation or infection. Avoiding any chemical hair treatments 2 weeks before and after your procedure. Increase your fluid intake and stay well hydrated leading up to your appointment.

  • Post-Treatment Care

Avoid touching the treated area for 2 hours after treatment to allow injection site to heal over. Wait until the next day to wash your hair. Hair products, intense exercise, excess alcohol and saunas should be avoided for the rest of the day. Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications in the 2 weeks following treatment as these may interfere with platelet activity. Swelling can be reduced by cool packs only if absolutely required.
