Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck)

Many of the women who present for an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, have had children. This operation is an opportunity to gain back some of the shape they had before and remove excess skin in a way that diet and exercise can never achieve. Some may have had a Caesarian section and have a roll of tissue that folds over the scar causing discomfort. You can wear close fitting clothes or a swimsuit and not have to worry about that roll again.

Cutera Excel laser has pioneered a new photo rejuvenation treatment which can lead to glowing, younger looking skin. All skin types are suitable with no downtime.

About

Firstly, you will have a consultation with the surgeon regarding your problem and the expectations you have for the final result.

Your surgeon will discuss the treatment options and provide you with an honest recommendation of the treatment required and the anticipated results, as well as details regarding recovery. Usually, pre-operative photos will be taken as part of the initial consultation as well.

One of the major features of an abdominoplasty is the tightening of the underlying muscles in the abdomen. Without this occurring, the results are never long lasting. The incision is made low on the abdomen and the skin and some tissue between there and the umbilicus is removed. The underlying muscles are tightened. The umbilicus is relocated, and the incision is sutured closed. Often there will be some liposelection of nearby areas performed at the same time, to assist in achieving the best final shape for the patient.

Treatment

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anaesthetic, and will take between 2-4 hours of surgical time.

You will be required to stay in hospital for 1-2 nights.

There will be small drains in each side of your abdomen to drain excess fluid away. These will be removed within a couple of days, depending upon the amount of drainage present.

Local anaesthetic is used during the operation so that the pain experienced afterwards is kept to a minimum, but you must expect some discomfort post – operatively. You will be given pain relief whilst in the hospital, and given pain relief to take home with you with instructions on when to administer this.

You can expect to be very tight in the abdominal area, and will have to walk bent over a little for a few days until your muscles and skin adjust to their new position.

A support garment is required to be worn post – operatively for 2-4 weeks.

Recovery time is 2-4 weeks, returning to full exercise in 4-6 weeks.
