Breast Reduction Surgery (Mammoplasty)

We understand that large breasts can feel like a liability at times. With breast reduction surgery at Skin Institute you’ll feel more comfortable and confident within your body.

Whether it’s due to a size discrepancy between breasts, shoulder and/or back pain, difficulty fitting clothing, embarrassment, difficulty exercising or sexual harassment based on breast size, breast reduction surgery is often needed to improve your health and confidence. Our skilled surgeons are here to help lessen the burden of a large bust with safe and effective reduction mammoplasty. Our surgeons are specialists in this area and as such the consultations are undertaken in a caring and empathetic manner with no need to be embarrassed.

Plastic surgery is part 'art' and part 'science'. Every patient requires an individually tailored solution and my philosophy is to dedicate whatever time, attention and effort is required to achieve the desired result in the safest possible way.

Reduction mammoplasty reduces the size of the breasts through the removal of skin, fat and glandular tissue. The areola will be relocated to reflect the changed shape and proportions of the breast, to ensure a pleasing appearance as well as new size. For women looking to avoid further problems because of big breasts, breast reduction surgery offers a real opportunity to improve their quality of life. For women over 35 we recommend an up-to-date mammogram.

This operation is performed under a general anaesthetic, and should take between 2.5 – 3.5 hours. You will require a one night stay in hospital.

The procedure itself involves an incision, usually an anchor shape, around the areola and down to the breast fold. There are alternative incisions, but during your consultation, and then again immediately prior to your surgery, the procedure will be discussed with you, depending on your exact requirements for the best outcome. Excess skin, fat and glandular tissue is removed, and the nipple and areola is relocated. You may have a small drain in each breast, to drain excess fluid from the breasts.

You will be stitched, and dressings applied. The drains and dressings will be removed the following morning by the nursing staff prior to your discharge from hospital. You will be required to wear a sports type bra night and day for 2 weeks post-operatively.  This will continue to be worn after this as no underwire bra is to be worn for at least 4 weeks. A full set of post-operative instructions will be given to you before leaving hospital, and it is important to follow the instructions to get the best possible result.

The majority of the swelling and bruising has resolved in 10-14 days, but it can take 3 months for the breasts to attain their final shape. You will need 10-14 days off work.

As with any surgery, there are possible complications, and these will be discussed thoroughly with you by your surgeon.

The vast majority of women who have had breast reduction surgery are thrilled with the results as their pre-op symptoms are always improved. These women are left feeling more in proportion, fitting clothes better and with less neck, shoulder and back pain, and an improved quality of life.
