Breast Augmentation
Breast Augmentation Surgery

We understand that, for some people, breasts are a part of you that can really affect your sense of femininity and identity. Breast augmentation with Skin Institute can enhance your breasts to a size and shape that will give you the confidence boost you’ve been looking for.

With years of experience, our expert surgeons have operated on and cared for many women in need of breast augmentation. Whether you have small breasts you’d like enhanced, asymmetrical breasts that could be a better match with each other, empty breasts after breast feeding, or you require a more substantial breast reconstruction following cancer or as a part of gender reassignment surgery, we can accommodate your needs at Skin Institute.

Plastic surgery is part 'art' and part 'science'. Every patient requires an individually tailored solution and my philosophy is to dedicate whatever time, attention and effort is required to achieve the desired result in the safest possible way.

About

If you want to increase the size of your breasts or enhance their shape, breast augmentation surgery could be the procedure you’re looking for. There are many reasons why you may be considering this surgery – these commonly include small breasts, reconstruction following a mastectomy, loss of volume and/or sagging following breast-feeding, breast asymmetry, or as part of male-to-female gender reassignment surgery. Skin Institute’s highly skilled cosmetic surgeons will work with your needs to create the bust of your dreams.

Breast augmentation surgery can be a life-changing step – but as with any surgery, there are some important things to be discussed about your surgery before committing to it:

  • Sometimes you are not sure if breast augmentation is for you, or perhaps you think you might need a nipple lift in conjunction with the augmentation. If you would like to discuss the options, you might like to have an appointment with our cosmetic surgery nurse, who will take you through the various options available for you. This would be free of charge. If a breast augmentation is something you want to consider, then the next step is to meet with the surgeon.
  • On your first consultation with the surgeon, you will be asked to wear a snug fitting top or undergarment to the consultation, to aid in the choice of the size implants you want. You will have the opportunity to try several different sizes. You will not be expected to decide at the time. We encourage you to come back for a second consultation before making your final choice.
  • You will have the operation under a general anaesthetic, and depending on the time of day of your surgery, and the type of Breast Augmentation done, (sub-muscular or sub glandular), will depend on whether you can go home the same day, or stay overnight in the hospital. You may have a small drain present in each breast, and that will be removed the next morning.
  • You will be required to wear a sports bra for a number of weeks’ post-surgery.
Treatment

Prior to any surgery, you will have an extensive consultation with our specialists, who will develop a plan that works for your needs. The opertaion itself will involve the following steps:

  • You will be placed under a general anaesthetic.
  • Your surgeon will make an incision, usually in the breast fold.
  • The previously chosen implant will be placed behind the breast tissue or the muscle of the chest wall, depending on what is most appropriate for you, and it will be positioned behind the areola.
  • Local anaesthetic will be injected around the wounds during the operation, to help provide good post operative comfort.
  • After this is completed, the wound will be stitched and taped, and bandages will be applied to the area.
  • Usually you will stay overnight in hospital and be monitored. Pain relief will likely be required for the first few days after the surgery, and you will also need to wear a special support bra for the following three to four weeks. Depending on the amount of surgery undertaken, your surgeon may leave drains in for a few days post-surgery to ensure a healthy and safe healing period.
  • You can expect to see some swelling for up to two weeks, changed nipple sensation for up to two weeks, and a small scar where the skin incision was made. This scarring will gradually improve over the following year – but if any elements of your recovery are a concern, our team are here to help. Make sure that you stay away from moderate exercise with heavy lifting for the first six weeks – though you can get back to lighter exercise with no arm-lifting after the first week.

You may stay overnight in hospital and be monitored, or discharged the same day once you are comfortable and recovered. Pain relief will likely be required for the first few days after the surgery, and you will also need to wear a special support bra for the following four weeks. If drains are present, you will stay overnight, and have them removed the next day prior to discharge.

Possible complications will be discussed with you prior to surgery with your surgeon.

Breastfeeding is usually not affected, and there is evidence showing no association between breast implants and connective tissue disease, and no association between breast implants and breast cancer.
