Duncan has joined the Skin Institute bringing his expert management skills in complex skin cancer, scar problems and hand surgery to the organisation. Providing optimal care and outcomes for patients using individual treatment pathways is central to his practice.

He graduated as a doctor from Guys and St. Thomas’ medical school in 2000 and then completed basic surgical training through hospitals in the South of England before a short return to Maxillofacial surgery. After passing his Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2005 he continued training as a plastic surgeon at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead a plastic surgery unit set up for the second world war by Sir Archibald McIndoe to treat burnt pilots. He passed his Fellowship exam in Plastic Surgery in 2011 and completed further sub specialisation plastic surgery experience with General, Hand and Microsurgical fellowships in the UK and New Zealand.

Duncan worked at Consultant level with a specialist interest in skin cancer at East Grinstead and Canterbury hospitals from 2014 before transferring to Hutt Hospital, Dunedin and Hamilton.

Throughout his training as a plastic surgeon and prior to this as a dentist he has been an enthusiastic educator of clinical, military and public audiences. Topics have included novel techniques for wound care and reconstruction especially the advantages of using the Keystone flap to avoid skin grafts. Volunteering as a key instructor in emergency burn care since 2005 for the Australian and New Zealand Burns association in the UK, Australasia and the Pacific Islands proved invaluable during his involvement with the White Island disaster.

Latterly the importance of clinical governance, efficiency, carbon saving and Human Factors on patient care has become a significant area of interest, research and instruction.

Duncan has over 30 scientific publications and contributions to book chapters along with numerous presentations and media appearances on television and radio.

Away from work he is supported by his wife but unfortunately Covid separated from their two children currently in the UK working and training at Vet school. His hobbies include barefoot running and keeping fit along with learning and assisting his wife bee keeping, any further spare time is enjoyed in developing craft beers in his home brewery.
