Pamper your skin after the harsh summer sun

With shorter days and gentler sun, winter is the perfect time to give your skin some TLC. That’s because many treatments are safest and give the best results when your skin is protected from the sun – much easier when you’re wearing long sleeves and tights! Many treatments also have a far better outcome on un-tanned skin.

Four treatments perfect for winter:

IPL: Intense Pulsed Light treatment improves appearance of skin redness, reduces brown spots and increases collagen production. It can also help to decrease the look of thread veins, and generally smooth uneven skin texture.

Laser: This treatment is a great way to reduce visible blood vessels on the face and legs, and remove unwanted hair. Some treatments, like laser genesis, will also help to imrpove fine lines and wrinkles.

Micro-needling and microdermabrasion: These treatments can be done throughout the year to encourage new skin growth. Winter is a great time to schedule an appointment, though – the treatments can freshen up your skin by removing the tough outer layer, revealing the glowing fresh face underneath.

Dermagun dermal restructuring is an advanced treatment that works just under the surface of the skin to deeply nourish, rehydrate and repair. Winter is the perfect time to repair and replenish your dehydrated skin with Dermagun™.

Preparing for treatment

If you’re not already, start using sunscreen daily, and add a vitamin A (retinol) cream at night. This will help lighten your skin tone and make treatments more effective. Some people with darker skin may also need pigment inhibitors as part of their daily regime, up to one month before the treatment.

Always wear sunscreen

It’s worth mentioning again! Preventing sun damage helps slow the aging process, keeping your skin looking younger for longer. Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen that has a minimum of SPF30, especially in the harsh NZ sun. Choose the product that has the highest percentage of zinc, aiming to have at least 10% zinc oxide as the active ingredient.

Remember, the rays that cause skin cancer and skin damage can penetrate glass and clouds – so even if it’s cloudy and wintertime, you should still wear sunscreen everyday. It is the best and cheapest way to look after your skin.

Vitamin A

While we all know about the importance of sunscreen, another effective skin treatment is vitamin A (also called Retinol). This vitamin helps regenerate cells, improves production of collagen and reduces redness of skin. Retinol also helps remove congestion, which can cause enlarged and blocked pores.

There are many products that claim to include retinol or vitamin A, but it’s often at levels too low to make a difference. Carefully read the labels on your skin-care products to check. As a general rule you should start off with a lower level of vitamin A, then gradually increase as your skin becomes conditioned to it.

Your skin dries out during winter – the cold weather and the change to warmer air as you move inside can disrupt the natural layer of oil that protects your skin. To combat this, applying a hydrating Vitamin B with niacinamide to your skin-care regime will not only reduce inflammation but protect the skin’s barrier.  It is also recommended to consider using products with hyaluronic acid to replenish the skin’s balance. You’ll find it in a range of serums and treatments.

Checklist for winter skin care:

  • Moisturise more to counteract the effects of winter weather.
  • Try adding specific moisturisers that use retinol/Vitamin A to your bedtime regime.
  • Book in your IPL or laser treatment.
  • Wear sunscreen every day.

Between microdermabrasion, IPL, laser and Dermagun™, we can help you find the right mix of treatments to best suit your skin. That means by the time next summer rolls around, your skin will be glowing and refreshed.
