Spider veins

Spider veins appear as red or blue coloured "tree branches" or "spider webs" on the very surface of the skin. These can appear on various parts of the legs including caves, thighs, buttocks and groin. Spider veins are often a cosmetic complaint and usually do not cause symptoms but can occasionally cause aching.

Causes

Spider veins can be caused by a backflow of pressure from underlying varicose veins, which may not be visible on the skin surface. Otherwise, spider veins are a result of locally fragile veins from such causes as hormone changes, exposure to the sun, or injuries.

Some spider veins, however, can be a sign of underlying varicose veins and your practitioner may commonly advise a varicose vein assessment prior to treatment to ensure best outcomes. Treatment may be needed to any underlying faulty veins, together with a recommended stand down period before any spider veins can be treated. It is important to perform the treatment in this order to minimise the risk of unwanted side effects such as leg vein matting and to ensure the treatment is as effective as possible.

Treatment

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical way to shrink away those unsightly Spider veins, preventing them from causing you any discomfort or embarrassment. Sclerotherapy treats spider veins by injecting a special sclerosant solution into the veins, damaging, shrinking, collapsing and dissolving them, helping to ease your mind from the stress that spider veins can bring and improve the cosmetic appearance of your legs.

Immediately following treatment, the veins may become swollen and bruised, the area treated will have a raised appearance at the injection site and you may experience some temporary discomfort or itchy sensation.
