Red skin

If you suffer from red or flushed skin, this could be for a myriad of reasons – some causes are more common than others, some are more concerning than others. Whatever the cause, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t have beautiful, healthy skin.

Flushed skin can be caused by something as simple as emotional state or in rarer cases, a symptom of another underlying condition. In terms of dermatological issues, rosacea is the most common condition we treat – but whatever the reason for your red skin, our expert team of Dermatologists and Dermatology Associates are always by your side to help you identify and treat it.

About

If you find that your skin is generally ‘normal’ in colour, but flushes with exertion or strong emotions (whether it’s anger, embarrassment, anxiety or stress), it’s most likely behaving the way that it should. However, if your skin redness is seemingly permanent – red regardless of exercise or emotional state – and your GP doesn’t believe it’s a component of another condition, it could be rosacea.

The condition is specific to people of Northern European descent, with genetics therefore playing a clear role. The exact reasons that an individual will develop rosacea are unclear – but it often begins with a tendency to blushing in younger years.

Treatment

For cases of rosacea, there are several treatment avenues that Skin Institute’s experts can guide you down. Topical and oral antibiotics can be employed, along with topical vitamin, beta and/or B3 treatments. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is also a highly effective option. Further information about rosacea treatments can be found on our Rosacea page.

For other causes of facial redness, your general practitioner can advise you on whether or not treatment or further investigation is required.
