Headaches may seem like an unlikely member of our skin concerns line-up – but severe migraines can be effectively treated with a surprising substance.
Botulinum toxin is primarily known for its smoothing of skin through relaxation of facial muscles. However, it can also alleviate the symptoms of chronic migraines – easing pain and mind alike.

Causes

Headaches can occur for a whole host of reasons – but migraines in particular have their own series of theorised causes. The precise mechanics aren’t entirely known, though there seem to be genetic and environmental factors at play.

Individual migraine episodes can be triggered by a number of things. For example, stress, overloaded senses (through bright lights or strange smells), hormonal changes and certain medications are all possible triggers – though there are many more.

Treatment

Many different types of headaches mean many different kinds of treatment. Migraines are the one type of headache that are treated with Botulinum at this point – any other conditions will be managed by your GP or another referred specialist. When Botulinum is used in treating chronic migraines, injections are made into the muscles of the forehead, scalp and sometimes neck – with repeated treatments necessary in order to renew the effects of the substance.
