The lowdown on PRP
Skin Institute
July 28, 2016

For the last couple of years, global beauty media has been abuzz with talk of appearance medicine’s newest and most exciting treatment which uses your own blood resources.  Kim Kardashian took to Instagram a year or so ago with photographs of herself with a red, pin-pricked face, directly after a treatment similar to a platelet-rich plasma transfer treatment and it caused quite a stir.  What was this new treatment, and what are its benefits? Also, is it really as scary as it looks? (The answer is no, but do read on…)

Platelet Rich Plasma Transfer, or PRP as it’s known, is actually not new – it’s been used for years to accelerate the healing of wounds and burnt skin and to help athletes recover from injuries – but it’s certainly currently one of the most talked about. The results we’re seeing from its use on our client’s faces have rapidly made it one of our favourites here at Skin Institute.

The procedure uses your own blood (a small amount taken from your arm – just like a blood test), which is spun in a centrifuge to separate out the plasma from your red blood cells. The platelet rich plasma is then re-injected back into the skin. It may sound a little high-tech but, to an experienced medical professional, it’s actually a relatively simple procedure.

The fact that a registered nurse or doctor must administer this treatment is the reason why it’s not available at mainstream franchised-style appearance medicine clinics. At Skin Institute our clinics are unique in that they are all medically led. PRP is becoming incredibly popular at Skin Institute, for exactly this reason: we have a team of highly trained medical practitioners, and have the specialist centrifuge equipment available at 10 of our 18 nationwide clinics.

Taking it up a notch, you can partner PRP with a treatment of hyaluronic acid and dermal needling. Hyaluronic acid is a potent hydrator forces the skin to activate even more of it’s own healing properties.

The results? Well, the results are many.

PRP’s main benefit is that it will improve your skin tone, and enhance your natural radiance and luminosity. This is because of the concentrated platelets and growth factors in your plasma, which are regenerative and rich healing substances. The best results are when you partner PRP with a dermal needling treatment, which stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. Add in a dose of hyaluronic acid and you have the trifecta: glowing, firm and even textured skin.

The real secret to PRP is that it actually employs the healing power of your own blood to rev up your skin cells and get them working beautifully. In essence you are helping your skin to repair itself more effectively.

You can expect gradual improvements in texture, radiance and tone over four to six weeks, as new collagen is created. We recommend a course of three treatments six weeks apart to maximise your result.

In short, you are looking at refreshed, revitalised, beautiful-looking skin. And who doesn’t want that?

The fact that it uses your body’s own ‘serum’ rather than injecting something else into your face is yet another reason our team appreciates the pure effectiveness of PRP. Many of our clients appreciate the ‘natural’ resources that it is based on, too.
