LIPS – Enhancement vs Restoration
Skin Institute
June 14, 2020

Lip filler is an ever contentious issue. Trends in lip augmentation have changed over time and evolved with the creation of more technologically advanced products and techniques. Around the world, different aesthetics have resulted in very different looks. In New Zealand, most clients coming for lip filler wish to maintain a natural look. This is quite different from the looks we often see on our screens, with the rise of the ‘extremely done’ face gaining popularity through the spread of social media ‘influencer’ culture.

An increasingly common desire, particularly in younger women who wish to look more like those they perceive as beautiful, is high doses of filler and large augmentations. While there is nothing wrong with having your own perception of beauty; lip augmentation is not a one size fits all treatment, and what may look attractive on one person can look overdone and out of proportion on another. It is extremely important, if you do desire a larger lip augmentation; that your provider has the experience and education to be able to assess your face and inject you appropriately. Small changes such as widening the lip, can turn a pretty and feminine lip into an unnatural and disproportionate one.

You can have a lip enhancement that leaves you with soft, kissable, hydrated, shapely features; and you deserve this! It doesn’t mean that you can’t have volume; but invest in a highly qualified practitioner who can take you through that journey and create the perfect lips for your face.

Lip restoration is ideal for those who want to bring back some youthfulness. This is not a heavy, volumizing treatment. The aging lip is complex, and it is important that this treatment looks absolutely natural. It should include a careful assessment, and the treatment of the supporting structures of the lip are a priority here. As we age, we begin to lose definition and our lips begin to lose their shape. They also thin out – the pink becomes less visible, lines begin to intersect; and the corners of the mouth turn down. All these age-related changes need to be assessed and treated, and by doing so, you can have a refreshed and rejuvenated look. Some clients feel hesitant about this treatment, as there are so often examples of overdone women in the media. The thing to know is that there are also many examples of great lip treatments out there – you just don’t notice them! Lips are such a beautiful feature on both males and females, and there’s no need to lose them to time.

Ultimately, your features make you, you. Whether you want to enhance or restore (or a little bit of both), the ideal outcome is for you to look and feel like the best version of yourself. If you want to look in the mirror and walk out the door with confidence, we’ve got you covered. If you want to take no-filter selfies, well we’ve got you covered for that too.

If you’re interested in dermal fillers, the best place to start is by talking to an experienced practitioner who knows the risks and can ensure the filler is administered safely. At Skin Institute we have rigorous protocols around filler treatment and only our highly-trained doctors and registered nurses perform these. Find out more here.
