UVA is around 20 times more prevalent than UVB, and because of its different energy level, is able to penetrate more deeply into the skin, reaching the dermis. While UVA doesn’t directly change DNA structures or burn the skin like UVB can, it has been shown to increase levels of free radical activity which in turn are responsible for damage to the skin’s supporting structures, including collagen and elastin fibres. Over time, this damage results in typical photoageing symptoms such as fine lines, sagging and reduced elastic fibre counts. For these reasons, UVA is often called the “ageing spectrum.”
