The MACS facelift is a surgical procedure designed to reduce wrinkles and remove any excess skin that is beginning to sag in the face and neck areas.
An incision is made on pre-marked skin in front of the ears, where dissection (separation of the skin and underlying tissue) is performed by a small tube and the administration of an anaesthetic fluid (hydro dissection). The underlying tissue is then elevated and repositioned by internal sutures. The excess skin in front of the ear is excised and the skin flap is re-draped and meticulously repaired.
The ideal candidate for this procedure is aged between 40 to 60 years, whose neck and face have begun to sag, but who still have some elasticity in their skin.
It is also an excellent procedure for patients who have already undergone a facelift in the past and require a touch-up. It can be complemented with a Threadlift procedure and Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).
The MACS facelift helps to remove excessive jowls around the chin and the deep creases that appear between nose and mouth, as well as restoring the outline of the jaw.
There are many variations, but the typical procedure is a day stay and performed under intravenous sedation. Once anaesthetised, the procedure takes approximately 120 minutes.
A facial support garment will be fitted and needs to be worn for 24 hours per day over the following seven days. Most patients are seen the next day, and the incision lines redressed. The application of topical Arnica cream, along with following post-operative instructions carefully, can aid the healing process.
Three days after the procedure, patients can remove their garment to wash their hair and apply the prescribed antibiotic ointment. Sutures are removed after day seven.
By the end of the first week the face will still be swollen. Dressings will be removed to enable the patient to shower. Sutures will start to dissolve. Patients can wear makeup to conceal
any discolouration.
By the end of the second week most of the bruising will have disappeared, sutures will have dissolved. Patients can start to think about resuming normal activities including non-strenuous work.
After one month patients may resume exercise. Tingling may be felt as numbness around the ears subsides, although numbness may persist for several months.
