Botox® Botulinum Type A Toxin

A safe injectable cosmetic treatment (containing purified protein derived from naturally occurring bacteria) that temporarily relaxes the facial muscle contractions that cause facial lines.

How does it work?

Botox® works by blocking nerve impulses. The result is that the muscles can no longer contract and so the wrinkles and lines relax and soften. Clinical use of Botox® (Botulinum Type A Toxin) is the result of more than 100 years of study
and research.

Botox® is used most often in the area between the eyebrows (glabella), the lines around the eye area (‘crows feet’), forehead lines and for enhancing eyebrow arches. It is also used to treat excessive under-arm perspiration, a ‘gummy’ smile, sweaty palms of hands and soles of feet and some types of migraines/headache.

Botox® injections should only be administered by a trained and qualified practitioner. The Skin Institute has an experienced team of registered nurses and doctors, to take you through your treatment program.

Treatment info

A Botox® treatment is mildly uncomfortable as the injections can have a bit of a ‘sting’. It takes approximately 15 minutes per area.

“Ouch Free" Botox® is now available. It usually takes 2-3 days for Botox® to take full effect. Ask us for more details. The post-effects of Botox® last approximately 4-6 months.

After treatment

Normal activities can be resumed immediately following treatment. The short-term side effects associated with Botox® can include swelling, redness, tenderness, slight headache and bruising at the injection site. There is also the risk of a droopy eyelid (Ptosis) when treating areas such as a frown, crow’s feet or brow lift.

It is not advised to have facials or massage (where you lie face down) in the first 72 hours post treatment. Strenuous exercise must be avoided immediatly after treatment. In rare cases there have also been reports of nausea, flu symptoms, muscle weakness and the sensation of ‘pins and needles’.
