Botox® has been used medically for over 30 years for a number of medical conditions. One of these treatments is for a condition called Primary Hyperhidrosis or Excessive Sweating. This is more common than most people think. It is a condition that results in sweating that exceeds the normal amount required to maintain a consistent body temperature. The main areas affected are the underarms, hands, feet and groin area. Generally however, patients suffer mainly from only one of these symptoms.

Botox® is not a permanent cure for this condition but it can relieve excessive sweating by up to 80%, for an average of 7 months. The majority of patients who decide to be treated with Botox® have generally tried everything available over the counter and / or on prescription and are looking for an alternative to surgery.

How does Botox® work?

Botox® works by blocking the nerve messages that, in the case of Primary Hyperhidrosis, cause the sweat glands to be stimulated. By blocking these messages sweat glands are unable to produce the excessive amounts of sweat in the treated area giving the patient a ‘normal’ sweat production.

What are the Botox® side effects?

As with all Botox® treatments there has been no proven long term side effects, associated with treatment. Short term side effects may include swelling, redness, tenderness, slight headache, pain and / or bruising at the injection site. In some cases because we are trying to regulate one specific area the body may try to regulate itself by over compensating the sweat in other areas.

What can I expect from a Botox® treatment?

Before we can proceed with your treatment we first need to assess the area. This involves using a starch and iodine solution to determine the area to be treated. For this we suggest you wear dark coloured clothing to avoid staining. In cases where we are treating your hands and feet a nerve block will also need to be administered as these treatments can be painful. For this type of treatment we recommend you have someone drive you to and from your appointment.

After your treatment, you should start to notice the effects taking place over the next 3 to 14 days and lasting an average of 7 months.
